One of the hardest things to deal with in this life is when, as a Jesus Follower, we try to live a life worthy of that title and we trip over the same sins that plague us repeatedly. How do we get beyond that? How do we “put off the old self” permanently and “put on the new?”

4:22-24 NIV

[22] You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; [23] to be made new in the attitude of your minds; [24] and to put on the , created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

This idea of tripping routinely over the “Old Self” or the sins that have plagued us for a while, is something that many Jesus Followers, including myself, struggle with. So then, what does the Bible say we can do to get beyond this crazy pattern?

Realize We are in a Battle
The first thing we need to realize is that we are in a battle, a spiritual battle, with an enemy that wants to keep us from being effective and what God is calling us to do. One of the things Paul calls us to do later in the book of Ephesians is found in chapter 6.
Ephesians 6:10-13 NIV

[10] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. [11] Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. [12] For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. [13] Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

We must take action to prepare for the battle, we are already a part of. You can’t fight a battle without being prepared. Checkout the list below and do some reading about the “gear” we have available for the battle:

This is just part one of what it takes to “put on the new self.” Keep an eye out for future articles as we explore more about Paul’s direction to the Ephesians.
