Ephesians 5: 25-26 says this:

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

First, let’s point something out. Gentleman need to love. That sissy, gross stuff that we avoid. Roses, listening, helping … all that junk guys hate. It’s not macho, there are no explosions and revving engines.

But “just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy” we need to do exactly the same. When you get married you’re not just expanding your domain to include that beautiful woman or adding a piece of gold on your finger. You are “giving yourself up” for your wife.

That doesn’t mean you stop enjoying all the things you enjoy. Sports, cars, computers, hunting, etc. But it DOES mean you put HER needs before your own. It’s what being a leader is all about.

Then, at the end of this passage it says this: “Cleansing her by the washing with water through the word“. If you’re not reading and studying with your wife on a regular basis then you’re not trying to aid in making her holy. It’s the profound opportunity and honor to do this!

Lord God, please help me be the man and husband You want for my wife. Help me to pray with her, pray for her and be a help in her spiritual growth. Help me to put her needs first, without complaint. Thank you for your blessings. Amen.
